"Sweet 16"

In all the recent articles about size-zero celebrities and the increasing levels of obesity in the British populace, the average size-16 Every-woman tends to get forgotten. She's not too thin, but neither is she overly fat; and despite being in a sizeable majority, her needs are often ignored by fashion designers

Whether you're searching for a stylish outfit at Prada or Topshop, the likelihood is that the size 16s are out of stock, or never available in the first place. Which is odd, because there's no obvious reason for this dearth of product, other than the fashion industry's phobia about what it deems 'too big'.

Anyway, you're probably already bored by the endless debates about ever-shrinking models and female celebrities; though I must admit, I still can't work out why there appears to be an exponential link between increasing fame and decreasing body mass. But there is a practical point to be made about where one might find designers who are prepared to sell attractive clothes to women who are bigger than matchsticks.

If you've got money, it's worth heading to the Betty Jackson shop on the Brompton Road in London, where there is usually a good range of size-16 clothes.

But if you're on a budget, then Gap has come to the rescue, with a new collection of ten dresses designed by Roland Mouret, available in store the day after tomorrow, in a democratic array of sizes including 16 (and above). They range from sleekly simple tunics to shirt dresses, all of them eminently wearable, either on their own with some black opaque tights, or over a pair of boot-cut jeans.

Styling Guide

All the Glitters

What are some ideas for eveningwears?

Breathtaking fabrics and sultry silhouettes dominate the night. For a chic twist on the classic black dress, try a halter ball gown in shimmering hammered satin, which makes for a stunning entrance to any formal affair. A knee-skimming strapless cocktail dress in crystal-encrusted tulle sparkles with youthful enchantment. And consider classics reinterpreted in rich hues and textures, such as gowns in jewel-toned taffeta or flecked with gold sequins. Timeless pieces will stand out long after this season ends.

Fall for Layers

Are there any rules for wearing leggins?

With skinny shapes dominating the fall runways, leggings will take you anywhere this season. Wear them casually on weekends or dress them up for the city with chunky Fair Isle sweaters or a cashmere cape layered over a slim turtleneck. Also, with the season’s emphasis on suits, feel free to pair them with a tailored jacket for the ultimate in a modern, sleek look. Leggings can also be worn at various lengths and will work well with most shoe styles, from flats to tall boots—look for them tucked into boots throughout the season.

Of Boys and Men

How do I wear a new menswear-inspired look?

Keep proportion top of mind as you experiment with menswear styles this season. The focus on shape is paramount in haberdashery. Impeccably tailored Glen plaid suitings are translated into feminine silhouettes with shrunken jackets and streamlined trousers. A state of perfect balance is achieved with the pairing of sleek cashmere leggings and voluminous capes and ponchos. Intricate detailing creates a smart juxtaposition between masculine and feminine, with equestrian leather patches gracing sexy, slim leggings and gold accents adorning jackets. Remember: balance is key.
